Professor Shanske Discusses Davis School Parcel Tax on Capital Public Radio

Professor Darien Shanske appeared on Capital Public Radio, Sacramento's NPR affiliate, for a story on a school parcel tax in Davis on July 8.

Davis voters approved "Measure E" last November. It charges $204 per year for single-family homes and $20 per unit per year for apartments and duplexes. Critics oppose the unequal rates.

"There's a bill pending in the legislature that would clarify the statute or arguably change the statute to allow parcel taxes with more than one rate," said Shanske.  "And of course, if that happens, Davis could pass the same measure but with a different authorization. So there are a lot of possible ways this can go."

Darien Shanske is a Professor of Law at UC Davis. His academic interests include taxation, particularly state and local taxation, local government law, public finance, and political theory, particularly jurisprudence.
