King Hall Students, Alumni Support Census Campaign

King Hall students and alumni reached out to more than 4,000 Yolo and Sacramento County residents to provide information on the importance of the 2010 Census as part of the national Ya Es Hora, Hagase Contar ("It's Time, Make Yourself Counted") campaign on March 28. 

The students, under the supervision of attorneys from the UC Davis Immigration Law Clinic, the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC), and California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation (CRLAF), met with individuals leaving church services in Sacramento, Woodland, and West Sacramento, handing out fliers, responding to questions, and encouraging people to complete and return census forms before April 1.

Students involved in the effort were Esmeralda Soria '11, Aidín Castillo '11, Aimé Castillo (Aidin Castillo's twin sister and a medical student at UC Davis), José Olivera '11, Erik Gutierrez '10, Theo Cuison '11, Sarah Jebrock '11, Richard Nguyen '11, and Rachel Ray '11.  Supervisors included King Hall alumni Professor Amagda Pérez '91; Daniel Torres '02, ILRC Census Project Director; Clara Levers '03, CRLAF Volunteer Attorney; and Santiago Avila-Gomez '02; Project Director; in addition to Juanita Ontiveros, CRLAF Special Projects Director; Sergio Pérez, Special Projects Assistant, Eliana Kaimowitz, CRLAF Project Director; and Immigration Clinic Administrative Assistant Martha Jaime.

"We received excellent feedback from all the sites and a great appreciation for the volunteer work of ILRC, CRLAF, and UC Davis School of Law," said Professor Pérez.
