King Hall Students Visit U.S. District Court

UC Davis School of Law students visited the U.S. District Court in Sacramento on February 16 as part of "A Day in the Federal Court System" offered by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California in coordination with the King Hall Criminal Law Association, the Federal Defender's Office, and the Pretrial and Probation Office. Students observed court proceedings and were treated to hours of insider analysis, professional advice, and real world insight into legal practice.

King Hall students who signed up for the event include Adam Brizzolara '17, Erika Budrovich '18, Sue S. Chang '16, Nick Chase '18, Karl S. Lindemann '18, Amanda Rose Miller '18, Jon Ogata '18, Raj Pai '17, Reema Pangarkar '18, Amanda Perry '17, Jonathan Shim '18, Ellen Thompson '18, and Chance Tseng '18.

Their visit to the Court included an observation of U.S. District Judge John Mendez's morning docket, followed by a visit with Judge Mendez and his clerks and a tour of his chambers. In the afternoon, students heard from a panel of representatives from the United States' Attorney's Office and the Federal Public Defender's Office, then proceeded to U.S. Magistrate Judge Allison Claire's courtroom for observation and discussion of the arraignment calendar. Finally, the students heard from federal probation officers and pre-trial services staff about the critical role these offices play in the day-to-day function of the federal criminal courts.
