Professor Michael Canzoneri and Judge Dennis Cota held a ceremony honoring the new King Hall members of the Order of Barristers, an honorary society for the most skilled trial and appellate advocates.

Last Thursday, UC Davis School of Law had an amazing series of events.

The end of year events continue in full force as the 2022/23 academic year comes to a close.

Last week, the law students, led by Law Student Association President Jason Wong ‘23 and Vice President Brenda Quintanilla ‘24, held a festive celebration of the hard work of our janitors at King Hall. Without their hard work, King Hall just would not be as nice a place to be. We met on a beautiful evening in the King Hall courtyard to celebrate the wonderful group of professionals, listed below. I had the honor of voicing thanks at the outset of the program.

The Entertainment and Sports Law Society is hosting the Dr. Ives Memorial Basketball Tournament on April 23, 2023 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the UC Davis Dairy Courts. Contact Josh Concepcion for more information. 

Judge Ramona Garrett '80 served on the bench in Solano County for more than 23 years, originally on the Municipal and then on the Superior Court. She was the county’s first woman judge and first African American judge to sit on those courts. After beginning her career in private practice, she became a Deputy District Attorney in Contra Costa County in 1982. Two years later, she moved to Solano County as a Deputy District Attorney. Almost immediately, she was assigned a high-profile capital murder trial involving a Vietnam veteran who killed a Fairfield police officer.

More good King Hall news! Today, Jose Castillo '06 was confirmed and sworn in as an Associate Justice on the California Fourth District Court of Appeal.

The Commission on Judicial Appointments, chaired by Chief Justice of California Patricia Guerrero and including Attorney General Rob Bonta and Presiding Justice Manuel Ramirez, unanimously confirmed Governor Newsom's nomination of Jose. He has been a Superior Court Judge in San Diego since 2020 and had been assigned family law. 

The Law School events continue to roll. Today, King hall hosted the "Confronting Climate Change: In California and Beyond" conference. The conference was co-sponsored by the UC Davis Environmental Law & Policy Center, the California Lawyers Association Environmental Law Section and the California Public Utilities Commission.

The end of the school year celebrations continue unabated. This week, the UC Davis Law Review held the annual Hopkins Reception, which honors a student for the best law review paper and allows for a celebration of a great year of work.

The Law Review has skyrocketed in the rankings in recent years. Its national prominence is a testament to the great work of its student editors.
