Sen. Sanders Introduces Bill Based on Professor Polcz's Research
On June 18, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) introduced a bill based on Professor Sarah Polcz’s research.
The American AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Act would give the public 50% ownership in the largest artificial intelligence companies in the United States. The bill is based on Polcz’s Columbia Journal of Tax Law article “Sharing The Algorithm: The Tax Solution to Generative AI,” written with George Washington University Law Professor Jeremy Bearer-Friend.
Polcz collaborated on drafting the bill and has discussed the article frequently in the media. On June 13, the New York Times mentioned an essay in The Hill she co-authored with Bearer-Friend. On June 20, The Information published a profile on Polcz headlined “The Law Professor Behind Bernie’s AI Sovereign Wealth Fund Idea.”
On June 25, Polcz and Bearer-Friend appeared on the Stanford Legal podcast to discuss how large AI firms should pay a tax with stock, not just cash.
