Professor Simmons Co-Authors Statement Praising Governor's UC Funding Plan

Professor Daniel L. Simmons, vice-chair of the University of California Academic Senate, together with Henry C. Powell, Professor of Pathology at UC San Diego and chair of the Academic Senate, issued a statement January 6 supporting Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposal to provide the UC system with funding equivalent to 10 percent of the state budget.   

"As individuals, and speaking only for ourselves, we whole heartedly endorse the governor's proposal," the statement reads.  "The proposal would bring much needed stability to the University of California and the California State University.  In addition, the proposal reflects an investment in the future of the State of California and in generations of its students."

The statement came in response to the governor's State of the State address given January 6, which included promises that he would submit to the Legislature a proposed constitutional amendment "so that never again do we spend a greater percentage of our money on prisons than on higher education."

Daniel L. Simmons is a UC Davis Professor of Law and a national expert on tax law, with an emphasis on corporate and partnership taxation.
