Professor Keitner Writes in The Conversation About Deportations to El Salvador

In a May 3 explainer piece in The Conversation, Professor Chimène Keitner answered key questions about Kilmar Abrego Garcia and others who had been deported to El Salvador by President Donald Trump’s  administration.

The cases “are not primarily about foreign policy,” as Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other Trump officials have maintained, Keitner wrote, but “the protection of individual rights, including the right to due process.”

Keitner noted that the Supreme Court made clear in the 1957 case Reid v. Covert that “the government cannot deprive U.S. citizens of due process by entering into an agreement with a foreign country. “

Professor Keitner is a leading authority on international law and civil litigation, and served as the 27th Counselor on International Law in the U.S. Department of State.
