Professor Simmons Comments on UC Online Plan for Bee

Professor Daniel L. Simmons commented on a University of California proposal to offer online courses and a possible undergraduate online degree program for an article in the Sacramento Bee.  Though some have argued that an online program is the best response to problems of declining state funding and increasing numbers of student applications, others have voiced fears that such a program would waste resources and compromise the university's academic quality.

"Are we in the business of making money by selling services to non-students?" asked Professor Simmons. "People have created a set of expectations about the potential for online education that is not really there."

Daniel L. Simmons is a UC Davis Professor of Law and vice chairman of the UC Academic Senate.
