Gary Solis '71 Files Declaration on Guantanamo Bay Ruling
Gary Solis '71, a nationally recognized expert in the law of war, has authored an influential declaration on the recent and seminal Supreme Court decision ruling that detainees at the Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp are entitled to invoke habeas corpus protection in federal courts.
Solis is 2006-2008 Scholar in Residence at the Law Library of the Library of Congress, an Adjunct Professor with the Georgetown University Law Center, and an Instructor at the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, San Remo, Italy. He is a retired U.S. Marine with 26 years active duty, including tours in Vietnam and service as a Marine judge advocate and military judge. He has been awarded many honors, including West Point's 2006 Apgar Award and the Army's Meritorious Civilian Service, Superior Civilian Service, and Outstanding Civilian Service Medals. He is the author of Marines and Military Law in Vietnam and Son Thang: An American War Crime, and is currently writing a textbook for Cambridge University Press on the law of war.
