The Honorable Abby Abinanti Speaker Series honors a pioneer whose career has transformed the landscape of tribal justice. The internationally acclaimed Chief Justice of the Yurok Tribal Court, Hon. Abby Abinanti was the first Native American student to enroll at King Hall and the first Native American woman to be admitted to the California bar. After serving as a San Francisco Superior Court Commissioner for almost twenty years, she returned home to the Yurok reservation to build a Tribal Court that has won global recognition for its restorative justice successes.
Professor Kevin K. Washburn is a scholar of federal Indian law and the co-editor-in-chief of the Cohen Handbook of Federal Indian Law. He served as the President Obama’s Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior during most of Obama’s second term. He has been an advocate for tribal land back, tribal co-management of federal public lands, and centering tribes in national conservation efforts. Professor Washburn is the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Resources Legacy Fund. Professor Washburn is also deeply engaged in legal education. He is the former dean of the law schools at the University of New Mexico and the University of Iowa and is currently the President-Elect of the Association of American Law Schools. He is an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma.
In his lecture, "The Crucial Role of Tribes in American Conservation," Professor Washburn will discuss the "land back" movement, tribal co-management of natural resources, conservation, and the sometimes-uneasy relationship between tribes and conservation groups.
