The Taliban are again imposing a regime of gender apartheid in Afghanistan in violation of international law, just as they did in the 1990s. Professor Karima Bennoune conducted fact-finding missions in different regions of Afghanistan in the 1990s and 2000s. She will talk about the counter-strategies necessitated by the Taliban’s imposition of system of governance based on subordination of women since its return to power in 2021 and explore how a weak international response to the Taliban undermines women's rights everywhere. Professor Bennoune, who taught at King Hall from 2012 to 2022, is the Lewis M. Simes Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School. From 2015 to 2021, she served as United Nations Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights. In September 2023, she addressed the UN Security Council about gender apartheid in Afghanistan.
