Professor Lin Comments on Deepwater Spill for Christian Science Monitor

Professor Albert Lin commented for the Christian Science Monitor on fines the U.S. Department of Justice may impose in connection with the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

"There's no perfect formula for figuring out the right amount," said Lin, but the recently released National Oil Spill Commission report will be helpful in determining factors like past negligence that can be used to create a rough methodology. BP could try to reduce the amount of damages by saying it has been cooperative in establishing a $20 billion escrow fund to pay for losses suffered by individuals and business owners, he added.

Albert Lin is a professor at the UC Davis School of Law with special interests in environmental law, natural resources law, and evidence.
