The teams of Patrick Anding '10 and Jesse Yang '11 and Samuel Carstensen '12 and Anthony Bettencourt '12 triumphed in the King Hall Intra-School Negotiation Competition on September 20, earning the right to represent UC Davis School of Law in the American Bar Association Regional Negotiation Competition in November.
The Intra-School Competition drew 56 King Hall competitors as well as 25 judges from Sacramento and the Bay Area, who evaluated the students' negotiating strategies and skills in three rounds of mock negotiations. Judges included Sarah McBride '09 and Jeffrey Osofsky '09, who won the International Negotiations Competition title for the United States in July, as well as Professors Andrea Bjorkland, Katherine Florey, Donna Shestowsky, and Rachana Shah, Solano County Supervising Juvenile Court Judge Gary Ichikawa '76, Sacramento County Superior Court Judge David I. Brown '74, Tracy L. Winsor '96, deputy attorney general with the California Department of Justice, and John O'Malley '98, a partner at Downey Brand in Sacramento.
The judges frequently commented on the students' impressive performances and the difficulties they had in rank-scoring the teams. In addition to Anding, Yang, Carstensen, and Bettencourt, the students scoring highest and earning the opportunity to compete in the final round were Philip Pan '10, Joanna Cuevas Ingram '12, Leonid Kandinov '11, and Jim Beck '12.
The winning teams of Anding and Yang and Carstensen and Bettencourt will go on to represent King Hall at the ABA Regional Negotiation Competition on November 13-14 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
