Dean Johnson Comments on Senate Immigration Bill for Southern California Public Radio

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for Southern California Public Radio station KPCC on a provision in the Senate immigration reform bill introduced last month that would allow some immigrants with deportation orders to pursue provisional legal status.

Dean Johnson said that it is unusual for lawmakers to propose this kind of clemency for deportees, including some who have already left the country.  "Every once in a while you'll see a court order someone who is deported to be brought back if they were deported in violation of the law, but this is not deportation in violation of the law, so it is somewhat extraordinary," he said.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
