Immigration Law Clinic Students Secure Client's Release from Detention

UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic students Anna von Herrmann '14 and Laurance Lee '14 have successfully secured their client's release from immigration detention.  Their client was in the Eloy Detention Center in Arizona for more than two months before being released last week.

Working under the direction of Immigration Law Clinic Staff Attorney Raha Jorjani, Herrmann and Lee appeared via telephone during the client's hearings before the Eloy, Arizona Immigration Court, prepared motions, and advocated directly with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for his release. The students used prosecutorial discretion memos issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to argue in a written request that their client was not an enforcement priority and that he should be released.  After careful review by a detention supervisor, ICE agreed and decided to release the man on his own recognizance last week. Thanks to the students' efforts, the client has been released and is back in California with his family.
