Professor Hing Comments on Sanctuary Ordinance for KPIX Web Report
Professor Bill Ong Hing commented for a news report published on the website of Bay Area television station KPIX on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors' recent approval of a measure that would keep law enforcement from turning over minors to immigration authorities unless they have been found guilty of a felony.
Professor Hing, who testified in favor of San Francisco's sanctuary ordinance when it was first proposed, said that when local police turn undocumented immigrants over to federal immigration authorities, it can undermine the relationship between police and community.
"Every day across the country, local law enforcement officials often do not turn over undocumented immigrants that they come across," he said. "They want to maintain a good, trusting relationship with immigrant communities because that is better for public safety."
Bill Ong Hing is recognized nationally as an immigration law and community lawyering expert. He is the founder of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center in San Francisco.
