PUBLIC SERVICE
PUBLIC SERVICE LAW PROGRAM
UC Davis School of Law has a longstanding commitment to public service and encourages all students to become involved in public service. The Public Service Law Program is an academic certification program developed for students seeking public service careers. Students are eligible to enroll at any time throughout law school but are encouraged to enroll in their first year. Enrollment in the Program demonstrates to employers a commitment to serving the public. Certificate requirements include academic and experiential components. To receive a certificate, students must fulfill the academic and experiential components of the Program. Certificates are awarded to graduating students at the annual Public Service Graduation ceremony.
Academic Coursework Requirements
Program candidates must complete a minimum of 15 credits of public service coursework from an approved course list. Coursework requirements begin in the second year, as all first-year students follow a required curriculum. Units from clinical fieldwork can be counted towards coursework requirements.
Public Service Legal Work Requirements
Program candidates must complete a minimum of 175 hours of legal work in public interest organizations, government agencies, and courts. The work must be performed under the supervision of an attorney or a member of the Law School faculty. It can be paid, volunteer or for clinical units. The experiential component provides students the opportunity to make important contacts with public service attorneys. In addition to assisting public service organizations meet their needs, volunteering offers students opportunities to interact with attorneys and gain practical legal work experience.

PRO BONO PROGRAM
The Pro Bono Program is a certificate program designed to enhance our student’s educational process. Pro bono work is volunteer legal work performed without compensation or academic credit and under the supervision of an attorney. Students can volunteer in public interest organizations, government agencies or courts.
Whether students aspire for a career in the public or private sector, providing pro bono services enhances their legal education. In addition to assisting public service organizations meet their needs, volunteering offers students opportunities to interact with attorneys and gain practical legal work experience.
Participation in the program also provides students recognition for their community service; upon completion of 50 or more hours of pro bono work, students receive a Pro Bono Program certificate.

PI/PS DAY
The Annual Northern California Public Interest/Public Sector Legal Careers Day (PI/PS Day), a job fair and networking event, is designed to increase students’ exposure to a vast array of public interest organizations and government agencies. Nine northern California law schools and the Public Interest Clearinghouse (www.pic.org ) host this event every February in San Francisco.
PI/PS Day has two components:
- Formal Interviews: Employers conduct on-site formal, pre-screened interviews for paid, work-study or volunteer positions. First, second, and third year students may apply for positions through PI/PS Day. Formal interviews are only open to students of sponsoring schools.
- Meet the Advocates: Representatives from organizations are available to speak with students. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the work done by a large number of organizations. This is a great opportunity to introduce yourself to the public service community and learn about a wide range of opportunities. These contacts can produce positive results, either in the short-run or further down the line. Meet the Advocates is open to the public.
