Jihan Kahssay '12 Publishes Op-ed on Eritrea

Jihan Kahssay '12, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Fellow at the UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic, has published an essay with Awate.com, the most cited Eritrean news source, and the California Aggie.

The article concerns a conference at UC Davis hosted by the Young People's Front for Democracy and Justice (YPFDJ), a youth organization that ostensibly aims to "build a strong, conscious and patriotic Eritrean youth movement."

"What I hoped would be a conversation about charges of serious human rights violations in Eritrea turned out to be little more than an hour of indoctrination and rhetorical sidestepping on critical issues," writes Kahssay, who was born in Saudi Arabia to Eritrean parents. In her essay, Kahssay details human rights abuses in Eritrea that were omitted from the presentation.
