Professor Chander Comments on Bullying Case for ABC News 10

Professor Anupam Chander commented for local ABC television affiliate KXTV  News 10 on the case of a New York bus monitor whose bullying at the hands of students was recorded on video and posted to the internet.

The video has drawn a lot of attention to the case, most of it sympathetic to the bus monitor. Professor Chander suggested that the outpouring of support for the bus monitor should not distract us from the need to address the systemic problem with bullying in our schools.   He noted that one of the potential dangers of this sort of social media-driven attention is that people may experience "compassion fatigue" that leads them to be less responsive to incidents of bullying in their communities. We cannot expect every instance of bullying to be addressed through viral videos, Professor Chander observed.

Professor Anupam Chander is a leading scholar in the law of globalization and digitization, and has written widely on international law and cyber law.  He is also Director of the California International Law Center at King Hall.
