Justice Kathleen Butz '81 Part of Historic First All-female Panel at Third District Court of Appeal

Kathleen Butz '81, Associate Justice of the California Courts of Appeal, Third Appellate District, was part of the first all-female panel in the 107-year history of the Third District Court of Appeal.  The story drew coverage in the Sacramento Bee.

With Associate Justices Elena J. Duarte and Andrea Lynn Hoch, Justice Butz took part in the historic milestone on April 17, hearing oral arguments in a high-profile murder appeal.  In remarks following the arguments, Justice Butz said that eight women have served on the 3rd District, including Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye '84, but until late 2010, when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Duarte and Hoch to the court, there had not been three women at the same time.

"After 107 years, we're on a roll," Butz said.
