Robert Mullaney '84 Receives Awards from Justice Department, U.S. EPA

Robert Mullaney '84, Senior Counsel with the Environmental Enforcement Section in the U.S. Department of Justice, has received the John Marshall award for Interagency Cooperation for his work supporting and assisting the Department of Defense's planned relocation of Marines and their dependents from Okinawa, Japan to Guam.  The John Marshall award is Department of Justice's highest award offered to attorneys for contributions and excellence in specialized areas of legal performance.  He also has been awarded a gold medal for exceptional service from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in recognition for his work negotiating a landmark Clean Water Act enforcement settlement with the City and County of Honolulu.  The settlement will require long-term improvements to the city's sewage collection system and two major treatment plants on Oahu.

Mullaney has been with the Environmental Enforcement Section since February 2001, primarily enforcing the federal Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act ( CERCLA) in the western U.S. and Pacific islands.  He has worked on enforcement cases on Guam since 2002, and brought the case on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that required Guam to close the hazardous Ordot Dump and helped to negotiate a schedule with the Guam Waterworks Authority to improve both drinking water and wastewater infrastructure on Guam.
