Mexican American Bar Association Federal Judicial Externship Program
Deadline: January 8, 2014
In 2013, the Mexican American Bar Association (“MABA”) launched the Federal Judicial Externship Program (“Program”) for law students from Los Angeles County and the greater Los Angeles area. That year, MABA was able to offer three law students a stipend to extern with three federal judges. The Program’s mission is to increase access to prestigious and highly coveted externship positions in federal district and appellate courts, for Latino/a students in Los Angeles. In 2014, MABA will select at least three (3) exemplary Latino/a students to be placed for 10 weeks as judicial externs. The students will be placed in the chambers of United States District Court Judges James Otero, Judge Phillip Gutierrez, and Fernando Olguin. Recognizing that Latino/a students are often unable to pursue federal externships because they are unpaid, the Program will additionally provide $1000 stipends to each of the three students selected.

Honorable Philip S. Gutierrez, Judge – United States District Court for the Central District of California.
Honorable Fernando Olguin, Judge—United States District Court for the Central District of California.

Each student will receive a one-time $1,000 stipend to be provided by MABA during the summer of 2014. 10 week Placement Summer Term; Full-Time (minimum of 40 hours/week) in Chambers of Judges. All externships will commence on May 27, 2014, and end after the completion of ten weeks. Daily work schedules to be coordinated with Chambers.
