With or Without Lawyers?

I am attending two events in Sacramento today.

Kathryn Doi '85, a partner at Murphy Austin Adams Schoenfeld in Sacramento, has invited me to a book party at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria.

Here's the info:
The 2 nd Annual Murphy Austin Author Series Featuring Philip K. Howard, in Conversation with Phillip Isenberg
Author Interview followed by a Cocktail Reception and Book Signing

The book is called Without Lawyers: Liberating Americans from Too Much Law.  Here's the premise: "Does fear of litigation prevent Americans from doing the right thing?  For social responsibility to flourish, do we really need to envision a life without lawyers ?"

Obviously, this is a controversial topic that a lot of lawyers and law professors wouldn't agree with.  It's ironic that the author, Philip K. Howard, is a partner in the New York office of a big Washington, D.C. firm!

I also will be at the Unity Bar dinner this evening, along with Associate Dean Vikram Amar, Senior Assistant Dean Hollis Kulwin, and King Hall staff and students.

The Unity Bar is an association of the Asian/Pacific Bar Association of Sacramento, La Raza Lawyers Association of Sacramento, Wiley Manuel Bar Association, Women Lawyers of Sacramento, South Asian Bar Association of Sacramento, and Sacramento Lawyers for the Equality of Gays and Lesbians.  The annual Unity Bar dinner is a great program that celebrates diversity and includes the presentation of law student scholarships.  Tonight's master of ceremonies is Judge Morrison C. England, Jr.  The keynote speaker is San Francisco District Attorney Kamala D. Harris

Looking forward to both events!
