Celebrating Korematsu Day

On January 30, California will celebrate its first-ever Fred Korematsu Day, a welcome recognition of the civil rights leader we know as the plaintiff in Korematsu v. United States. UC Davis School of Law will participate in a variety of ways, including a visit to Fred Korematsu Elementary School in Davis by King Hall Professors Anupam Chander and Madhavi Sunder, who have authored a comic book, Fred Korematsu: All-American Hero, to help teach children about Korematsu’s story and the legal and civil rights issues involved.

Anupam and Madhavi visited the school on Friday, January 28, to read from the comic and talk about Korematsu and the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. Watch for an article on their visit in the January 30 Davis Enterprise. The comic and the story of how it came to be written are also the subject of a feature story recently posted to the UC Davis homepage. (Read the article here.)

On February 2, the Law School will welcome Karen Korematsu, Korematsu’s daughter and the co-founder of the Fred T. Korematsu Institute, for a lecture on her father and his legacy. You can find more information on that event here.

On February 23, King Hall will host a discussion of Korematsu featuring Dale Minami, the lead attorney of Korematsu’s legal team, and members of the Law School faculty. Watch the Law School website for more details on this exciting event!
