Law School Successfully Completes
First Phase of Mabie Challenge

Thanks to the enthusiastic response of the King Hall community,
UC Davis School of Law has successfully completed the first phase of
the Mabie Challenge, and the William and Inez Mabie Foundation is
set to commit an additional $400,000 to the King Hall Expansion and
Restoration project.  Now, the Law School is stepping up efforts to
increase alumni participation and complete the final phase of the
Challenge—an achievement that will prompt the Mabie Foundation to
commit an additional $100,000.

Alum Profile:  Judge Ramona J. Garrett ’80

Ramona Garrett ’80 has come a long way since the days when she
and her older sister had to share a single coat in the snow.  As
Presiding Judge of the Solano County Superior Court, Garrett can look
back on a spectacular career in which she overcame the challenges of
being an unwed teen mother to become the first female and first
African American superior court judge in Solano County, and she’s
grateful for the role UC Davis School of Law played in providing the
training she needed.

Swearing-In Ceremony Draws Outstanding Turnout,
Media Coverage

A soaring bar passage rate and a strong sense of community among
the Class of 2009 contributed to an outstanding turnout for the
Swearing-In Ceremony at King Hall on December 4.  Most of the 156
members of the Class who passed the California State Bar exam this
summer were in attendance, along with a large audience of family and
friends.  In addition, the event drew coverage from three local
television stations.

2009 Sees King Hall’s East Wing Take Shape

The King Hall Expansion and Renovation project made swift progress
during 2009, as work on the Law School building’s new east wing
progressed from the laying of the foundation early in the year through
a May celebration of the completion of the building’s steel frame, then
a busy summer and fall that saw the exterior walls take shape.  By
year’s end, the new structure was fully winterized and more than 50
percent completed, and the Dean’s Office was working to finalize plans
for the renovation phase beginning in May 2010.
