Financial Aid
All law students who are U.S. Citizens or Eligible Non-Citizens are required to apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). UC Davis will use the information you provide on the FAFSA to determine your need and to provide you with financial aid (if you are eligible). The Priority Filing Period for 2011-2012 is January 1 through March 2, 2011 for all types of funding, which may include Scholarships, Work-Study funds and Direct Loans.
For more details about the types of aid available at the UC Davis School of Law, see Types of Assistance.
2011-2012 New and Transfer Applicants:
- Do not wait for an admission decision to apply for Financial Aid.
- File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
online by March 2. - Obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) at http://www.pin.ed.gov

- List UC Davis School of Law code 001313 and a housing code on the FAFSA.
- When you file online, be sure to write down your confirmation number or print the confirmation page, which is provided when your FAFSA is accepted and submitted online. If you don't receive a confirmation number, your FAFSA has not been properly completed or filed.
- Complete the Need Access Application
by March 2. - Provide parent income information on the Need Application unless you meet one of the following criteria:
- Natural parents are deceased;
- Student is 30 years of age or older by December 31, 2011;
- Student is a veteran;
- Student has legal dependents.
- Answer all questions on the FAFSA and Need Access Application. If you have not completed your federal tax return, estimate as accurately as possible using your prior year federal tax return. Keep copies of your completed tax returns and W-2s.
Continuing UC Davis Law Students:
- You must reapply for financial aid for each academic year. There is no assurance that aid will be awarded in the same types and amounts from year to year. If our funding levels permit and if your own personal resources do not change, aid usually continues at the same level each year.
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
by March 2. - List UC Davis School of Law code 001313 and a housing code on the FAFSA.
- After filing online, write down your confirmation stamp number.
- Answer all questions on the FAFSA. If you have not completed your federal tax return, estimate as accurately as possible using your prior year federal tax return. Keep copies of your completed tax returns and W-2s.
After You File the FAFSA (All students):
- Provide your email address on the FAFSA. This allows the Federal Processor to send you e-mail when your FAFSA is received and processed and direct you to a web site to view your Student Aid Report (SAR) and make corrections.
- If you file a paper FAFSA (or don't provide an e-mail address), within four weeks the Federal Processor will send you a Student Aid Report (SAR) with your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) shown in the top-right corner. The Financial Aid Office will use the EFC to determine your eligibility for aid. If there is no EFC number on your SAR, see You (the student), step 2, of the SAR for instructions. If the processor has selected your application for verification, You (the student), step 3, of the SAR will read "You will be asked by your school(s) to provide copies of certain financial documents.”
Financial Aid Requirements
- Once you've applied for financial aid and received notice of your eligibility, there are important requirements you should be aware of before you accept financial aid at UC Davis. These requirements will be listed for your review throughout the summer months online at http://financialaid.ucdavis.edu/MyAwards/
. The requirements shown can affect your eligibility for financial aid at UC Davis. - Verification: If your FAFSA is selected for verification, an electronic Financial Aid Notice (eFAN) prepared for you by UC Davis will instruct you to submit a Federal Verification Worksheet and additional documents as needed (e.g., federal tax returns). The worksheet and instructions are available through your eFAN. All financial aid is subject to change or cancellation pending verification. Aid cannot be processed until all documents are received.
- Report All Resources: Report to the Financial Aid Office all outside scholarships, fellowships, or stipends, and any other income or benefits not reported on the FAFSA. Students who do not report all outside resources may be required to repay financial aid.
- Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP): Federal regulations require that students who receive financial aid must maintain satisfactory academic progress. The SAP Standards for Financial Aid for Law students are available for review online at http://www.law.ucdavis.edu/current/financial-aid/satisfactory-academic-progress.html
- Planned Educational Leave Program (PELP), Leaving School, Withdrawing from School, Canceling Enrollment or Dismissal: If you participate in the UC Davis Planned Educational Leave Program (PELP), withdraw from school, leave school, or are dismissed from UC Davis for any portion of the academic year, you may be required to repay financial aid. If you accept loans as part of your financial aid, your grace period, which is the six-months you are given after you leave school until you must begin repaying your loans, will be reduced by the amount of time you are on leave.
- Accuracy is important when you apply for financial aid. All information is subject to verification according to state and federal regulation. Any false statements or misrepresentations will be cause for denial, reduction, cancellation, or repayment of financial aid.
- Please do not send in your Federal Student Aid Report or income tax forms unless the UC Davis Financial Aid Office requests them.
- UC Davis Financial Aid award information
for law students will be available online beginning in mid-May.
