The LL.M. program integrates American and international law students at all levels of study and provides LL.M. candidates with a broad curriculum of many different courses. Through the LL.M. program, international law graduates are able to gain a basic knowledge of the U.S. legal system and also have the opportunity to develop special expertise in a particular area of law. The law school promotes transnational law knowledge and economic development and prepares its students for global interaction and their professional roles in the internationalized economy.
The LL.M. program follows an academic calendar with the program starting in late August and running through May of each year.
Tuition and Fees:
Non-refundable application fee: U.S. $80. Tuition for the 2013-14 academic year, tuition and fees were $49,250*. This does not include a fee of approximately $2,280* for graduate student health care coverage. The health care coverage may be waived with proof of comparable health care coverage. Please see the section on medical care coverage in the LL.M. program brochure (link below) for additional information. * Fees are subject to change.
Each LL.M. candidate must successfully complete a minimum of 20 semester units of work. International LL.M. students must enroll in the one-unit course, Introduction to Legal Research, and the two-unit course, Introduction to the Law in the United States.
International LL.M. students earn the remainder of their required course credit in regular, elective law school courses. Each LL.M. student must also complete an intellectually rigorous legal research and writing project.
There is a minimum TOEFL score of 570 (or 230 for the computer-based examination TOEFL-CBT, or 88 for the iBT exam) required by the law school for foreign language applicants to the LL.M. program. A minimum of 6.5 IELTS is also acceptable. International applicants must present satisfactory evidence of the completion of legal academic training at an accredited educational institution. American applicants must have completed at least seven years of residential study at accredited colleges and law schools and must hold a professional degree from a law school approved by the American Bar Association.
LL.M. Application Process:
The Admissions committee will review LL.M. applications beginning in January. Students are encouraged to apply by January 10. We continue to accept applications on an ongoing basis, and welcome and encourage all new applications until August 15th. Applications will be reviewed after they are complete.
- Completed application form.
- One official set of academic records issued in the original language and accompanied by a certified English translation. Academic records should show graded coursework, dates of enrollment and award of degrees, plus a certified copy of the actual degree or state examination for all university and law school study.
- Three letters of recommendation. It is preferred that these letters come from the applicant's law professors.
- Official score for either TOEFL or IELTS. A minimum of 570 TOEFL, 230 for the computer-based TOEFL-CBT, or 88 for the iBT examination is required. Score reports should be sent to Institution Code 4778. A minimum of 6.5 IELTS is also acceptable.
- Statement of Purpose. This statement should include the reasons why the applicant is seeking a degree from the School of Law.
- Personal summary. This is a brief personal history, with emphasis on the development of your interest in law.
- Resume or curriculum vitae.
- Non-refundable application fee of U.S. $80. (If you choose to submit your supporting documents and/or application through LSAC, this fee will be waived.)

Option 1: Online through LSAC:
We recommend that you apply through LSAC, but it is not required. UC Davis will waive its application fee of $80 for students applying through LSAC who use the LL.M. Credential Assembly Services. However, LSAC requires that all LL.M. applicants purchase the Document Assembly Service for $75 USD plus $21 USD for each law school report. This service is good for five years and allows applicants to access and transmit online applications and send materials to LSAC for forwarding to law schools. Please note: LSAC also offers The International Transcript Authentication and Evaluation Service for a fee of $125. This is an optional service and is not required by UC Davis.
