Dean Johnson Comments for CNN on U.S. Supreme Court

Dean Kevin R. Johnson contributed comments to a CNN report on the ways in which the U.S. Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Roberts has viewed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other legislation that enable women and minorities to seek legal recourse for discrimination.

Dean Johnson commented that in Wal-Mart v. Dukes, the Court made it much more difficult for employees to band together in class-action suits against employers that discriminate, making it difficult for individual employees who lack financial resources to challenge a corporation's discriminatory practices.

"I worry that the courthouse doors will be closed to the little guys trying to vindicate their rights," Dean Johnson said.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
