Dean Johnson Comments on Immigration Detention for Southern California Public Radio

Dean Kevin R. Johnson commented for Southern California Public Radio station KPCC on the proposed reduction in federal funds paid to private contractors and local governments for housing immigrant detainees. Similar cuts proposed by Congress in the past have failed to pass, but Dean Johnson said that given the political climate surrounding immigration reform this year, the budget reductions may be enacted.

"It's hard to justify a guaranteed number of beds being filled when you have no idea whether legitimate law enforcement is going to fill those beds," Johnson said.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
