Dean Johnson Interviewed by KTXL on Sergio Garcia Case

Dean Kevin R. Johnson was interviewed at length by Sacramento television station KTXL regarding the recent California Supreme Court ruling in the case of Sergio Garcia, an undocumented immigrant who was found eligible for a license to practice law in California.

Dean Johnson provided background on Garcia, who was brought into the United States as a child and who applied for an immigrant visa in 1994 but is still awaiting approval. "He did pass the bar examination, he did pass the moral character check, and he did everything he was supposed to do within his power to become a lawyer and eventually became a lawyer," said Dean Johnson. "In some ways, it's surprising to some of the public, but in other ways, legally it's not particularly surprising."

Dean Johnson, who was one of the attorneys on the briefs for the State Bar of California in the Garcia case, also touched on related issues of immigrants' rights and federal jurisdiction over immigration.

Kevin R. Johnson is Dean and Mabie-Apallas Professor of Public Interest Law and Chicana/o studies at UC Davis School of Law. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of immigration law and policy, refugee law, and civil rights.
