Supporting Students, Changing Lives: The King Hall Annual Fund

The King Hall Annual Fund is making a difference in the lives of today's UC Davis School of Law students, supporting scholarships, student organizations, and a wide range of programs and activities that significantly enhance their educational experiences and the Law School's national reputation. For Irene Williams '14 and Katy Zils '12, gifts to the Annual Fund helped make the dream of a King Hall education come true.

Growing up in public housing in Houston, Texas, Irene Williams dreamed of becoming an attorney. She persevered, graduating with honors from the Longhorn Scholars Program at the University of Texas. She chose UC Davis School of Law largely due to its connection to Martin Luther King, Jr. and commitment to his vision, but it was the Law School's ability to offer her the Dean's Merit Scholarship that made King Hall a viable option for her.  Today, Williams is flourishing at King Hall. She served as a regional representative to the national Black Law Students Association and participated in an externship with the Sacramento County District Attorney's office. This year, she took the next step toward realizing her dream when she accepted an offer to join the District Attorney's office full-time after graduation.

Katy Zils came to law school looking for ways to connect with her community, and she found those opportunities at King Hall. In addition to participating in the Pro Bono Certificate Program, the Public Service Certificate Program, and Law Review, she worked at the Family Protection and Legal Assistance Clinic. Zils credits the clinic with strengthening the presentation and public speaking skills that are essential to her success as an attorney. Her stellar academic performance at King Hall led to a summer associate position with Kirkland & Ellis LLP in San Francisco, and upon graduation she accepted a permanent job with the firm.

With student fees now approximately $48,000 per year, the King Hall Annual Fund has become a critically important tool for attracting and maintaining a diverse student body, fostering a cooperative and supportive atmosphere, and providing students and faculty with the resources needed for an unsurpassed level of legal education. Your gift to the Annual Fund helps to enable students like Irene Williams and Katy Zils achieve their dreams and supports the continued excellence of UC Davis School of Law.
