Immigration Clinic Prevents Wrongful Deportation of Citizen Client

Immigration Law Clinic students Laura Gavilan '14 and Mohammed Osman '13, working under the direction of clinic Staff Attorney Holly Cooper, have succeeded in terminating removal proceedings filed against a U.S. citizen client.

The client believed he had derived citizenship from his parents, who naturalized before his 18th birthday, but was unable to gather evidence while in immigration detention.  The students researched the issue and found that the client was indeed a U.S. citizen, and filed a joint motion with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Office of Chief Counsel to reopen the removal order.  On May 7, a judge reopened the removal order and terminated removal proceedings.
