King Hall Immigration Law Clinic Wins Cancellation of Removal for Client
In the culmination of eight years of litigation, the UC Davis School of Law Immigration Law Clinic succeeded last week in restoring the permanent legal resident status of a Mexican man who had been deported as a result of a minor theft conviction as a teenager. The case required students and faculty of the Immigration Law Clinic to show that the client was eligible for cancellation of removal by imputing his father's legal admission date. The issue was presented to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, which ruled in the client's favor and remanded the case to the Board of Immigration Appeals, which remanded it to an Immigration Court in Arizona, which last week granted relief from removal. Several King Hall students worked on the case under the direction of Immigration Law Clinic Lecturer Holly Cooper, including Kevin Pease '13 and Aida Macedo '11.
