King Hall Hosts Delegation from Leading Chinese Law School, Forms Strategic Partnership

Dean Kevin R. Johnson and UC Davis School of Law hosted a delegation from China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) on November 3-5 in a visit that included the signing by UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi and CUPL President Jin Huang of an agreement to form a new strategic partnership between UC Davis School of Law and CUPL, one of China's largest and best law schools.

The partnership involves a series of cutting-edge legal research and educational initiatives, including faculty and student exchanges, joint research, a new Ph.D. summer program, a joint collaboration with CUPL's China/European Union Comparative Law Program, a new intellectual property certificate program hosted at CUPL's Beijing campus, and a joint LL.M. program.

"It was an honor to host President Huang and the CUPL delegation, and to help forge this important strategic partnership," said Dean Johnson.  "This is an opportunity for UC Davis School of Law to work with CUPL on a range of initiatives that will promote outstanding legal education and research at both institutions and ultimately strengthen the legal systems of both countries."

President Jin Huang and a six-person CUPL faculty delegation spent two days at King Hall meeting with faculty, students, and alumni.  As part of their visit, the delegation members also travelled to Sacramento to meet with Senator Lois Wolk and visit the California Legislature.

Dean Johnson hosted a number of events, including a dinner for President Huang and the CUPL delegation with California Supreme Court Justice Ming Chin and UC Davis School of Law faculty.  During the visit, President Huang met with Chancellor Katehi to sign the new Agreement of Cooperation and to invite the Chancellor and Dean Johnson to attend a special China University of Political Science and Law 60th Anniversary Celebration in Beijing in 2012 that will draw global leaders in education and law.  President Huang also asked Dean Johnson to give a presentation about U.S. legal education to the audience at this important celebration.
