The California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) has named Brian J. Bartow '89 as its new General Counsel. His role as lead attorney for the nation's second largest public pension fund is effective June 1, 2010.

"Teachers are one of California's greatest assets and their work touches all of our lives in some important way. I am proud to join with our superb staff in their dedication to securing the financial future of California's educators and their families," Bartow said in a CalSTRS release. "I look forward to working with the Teachers' Retirement Board and the exceptional leadership at CalSTRS as we face the challenges and opportunities of today and the future."

After graduating from King Hall in 1989, Bartow spent a decade in private practice before joining public sector practice, most recently at the California Department of Social Services. Before that, he held high-level legal positions at the California Department of Managed Health Care and California Department of Corporations. Bartow became acting General Counsel in November 2009.  He lives in Elk Grove with Nancey, his wife of 27 years. They have three children.
