Professor Hing Speaks at Advancing Justice Conference
Professor Bill Ong Hing was part of a panel discussion on immigration reform that took place as part of the 2009 Advancing Justice Conference in Los Angeles October 29-30. The conference, which brought more than 400 leading civil rights advocates, attorneys, academics and community leaders from across the country together for the first national civil rights conference for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, was hosted by the Asian Pacific American Legal Center in Los Angeles; the Asian American Institute in Chicago; the Asian American Justice Center in Washington, D.C.; and the Asian Law Caucus in San Francisco.
Professor Hing participated in the panel discussion on "The Monumental Stake: Reflections from Key Stakeholders in the Fight for Immigration Reform," which took place October 29. Moderated by Karen Narasaki, president and executive director of the Asian American Justice Center, the panel also included Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, Eliseo Medina, international executive vice president of the Service Employees International Union, and Eva Paterson, president of the Equal Justice Society. The speakers reviewed the debate's history, discussed successful models for uniting communities of color, and gave advice on engaging faith and labor constituencies in this debate.
Bill Ong Hing is recognized nationally as an immigration law and community lawyering expert. He is the founder of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center in San Francisco.
