Professor Amann Comments on Karadzic Trial for IWPR
Professor Diane Marie Amann commented on the trial of Radovan Karadzic, former president of Bosnia's Republika Srpska, for an article published by Institute of War & Peace Reporting.
Karadzic, who is being tried by an International Criminal Court tribunal on two counts of genocide and nine other war crimes and crimes against humanity, has refused to attend his trials. He claims he has not had enough time to prepare for his defense, even though he was arrested more than 15 months ago and first indicted in 1995.
Professor Amann commented that moving forward with the trial without Karadzic could be problematic in such a high-profile case. "The question is more one of perception and legitimacy of the proceedings, if they choose to go forward without him present," she said.
Diane Marie Amann is Professor of Law at the UC Davis School of Law and Director of the California International Law Center at King Hall (CILC). Among her areas of expertise is international criminal justice.
