Professor Larson Comments on Paparazzi Bill for Sacramento Bee
Professor Carlton Larson commented for the Sacramento Bee on a bill by California Assembly Speaker Karen Bass that would discourage paparazzi misconduct by allowing publishers to be sued for using images or sound recordings that they knew were obtained violently or illegally.
The measure, Assembly Bill 524, is almost certain to generate controversy, pitting supporters who view it as a boon to public safety against those who oppose potential restrictions on the free-speech right to publish truthful information.
"I'm positive this will wind up in court, some way or other," Professor Larson commented, adding that the law "appears to be written fairly carefully" to limit impact on news gathering.
Carlton Larson's research interests focus on constitutional law and legal history, with a strong emphasis on the 18th century.
