Professor Shestowsky Comments on Dugard Kidnapping for KCRA 3
Professor Donna Shestowsky appeared on the September 30 broadcasts of KCRA 3 Reports to comment on the content of a letter sent by Phillip Garrido, the convicted rapist accused of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard more than two decades ago in a case that has drawn attention from national media. Shestowsky, an expert in law and psychology, analyzed the content of the letter, which was mailed to KCRA 3 anchor Walt Gray and alleges that Dugard's civil rights have been violated.
Professor Shestowsky notes that the letter, while "very interesting," contains statements regarding facts that are hard to imagine that Garrido has access to, such as whether Dugard had been questioned by detectives and who had been present for the questioning. "It would only make sense if he believes that he's all-knowing, almost a god-like figure to some degree, that he could see things and hear things without actually being physically present to see and hear them," said Professor Shestowsky.
Donna Shestowsky is a Professor at UC Davis School of Law, where she teaches Criminal Law, Negotiation Strategy, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and a seminar in Legal Psychology. She was the 2007 recipient of the Law School's Distinguished Teaching Award.
