To locate a book at the Mabie Law Library, search the online catalog called MORT. A search result on MORT will provide a "CALL NO" (call number) to find the book on the shelf. Need help? Stop by the Reference Desk, call 752-0210 or send e-mail to: lawlibref@ucdavis.edu.
The following call number location list applies to the books in the Law Library's open stacks. Books in closed stacks include: Reserve, Rare Books, Archives, Storage (NRLF), and Superceded volumes. For access to books in closed stacks, inquire at the Reserve desk. In open stacks, the Law Library uses the classification system of the Library of Congress. The system arranges books by topical call numbers.The first letter of call numbers is a general topic (K is Law).
The following letters indicate jurisdiction (KF is Law of the U.S.).The second line is a specific topic (KF/1250 is U.S. torts law). The last line arranges books alphabetically by author (KF/1250/P76 is Prosser on Torts).Note: Lines beginning with letters are decimals (e.g., P76 is shelved before P8).Note also: Not all books on a topic are together (e.g., medical torts may be in KF and R).
