Assistance with Research & Library Collections
Reference Librarians are available to assist students with print and online legal research during all open hours -- in person, via email
or by telephone at 752-0210. Students, especially research assistants, are encouraged to schedule an appointment with a Reference Librarian to discuss individual research needs.
Books & Other Print Materials
Finding Books:
Visit the Library's Find Books page for details on searching for books found at Mabie Law Library, other UC Campus Libraries and beyond.
Borrowing Books & Interlibrary Loan:
Procedures for borrowing, returning, renewing and interlibrary lending of books and other materials are found at the Circulation Services web page.
Course Reserve
Materials that are required and recommended by law professors for a specific course are located along the back wall of the Library's Reserve area. These Course Reserve materials are arranged in alphabetical order by professor's last name. To see what has been placed on Course Reserve or when specific items are due, consult the library's catalog, MORT, by entering the course name or the professor's last name.
Current-Awareness: Alerts & Newspapers
Alerts:
Students may track current developments in the law and other areas of interest via e-mail alerts. Reference librarians can provide assistance setting up the search queries to activate these automatic searches in Lexis and Westlaw or activating table of contents e-mails for specific publications from other vendors such as Bloomberg BNA, CCH, RIA or CILP (a weekly index to legal periodicals).
Newspapers & Magazines:
Copies of the Davis Enterprise, The Economist, Los Angeles Lawyer, Ms., New York Times, Sacramento Bee, Sacramento Business Journal, Sacramento Lawyer, San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Attorney and Wall Street Journal are available weekdays in the Student Lounge.
Desktop Support & Computer Services
The Information Technology "I.T."department provides desktop support for all computers and printers in King Hall and maintains a Computer Lab for UCDavis Law students only. Law students are also provided with Microsoft software, anti-virus protection, Examsoft software, campus e-mail accounts, wireless access, printing accounts, and personal backed-up data storage drives -- for details visit the I.T. department

Exams Database
The Library maintains an exams database
that is restricted to law students and requires use of student ID. Paper copies of exams of faculty who do not allow online distribution are kept at the Reserve desk. Contact: 752.3327 or Circulation/Reserve desk.
Faculty Publications
The Library maintains an archive of Law faculty publications and exhibits selected faculty publications in the corridor south of the Mabie Library entrance. Each faculty member is asked to select a representative sample of his/her publications to include in the exhibit.
Keycards
UCDavis law students will be given keycard access to King Hall for after-hours access to all areas of the Library except the Reserve section and special collections. The cards, which have photo identification, can be used to check materials out of the Library collection.
Lost and Found
Found items are held at the Circulation Desk for a reasonable time. Items are then turned over to the Law Student Association or, if valuable, to the campus police.
New Books
The Library prepares a monthly list of New Books and also a selected list of "highlighted books" that is updated regularly. Recent acquisitions are housed in an exhibit case located outside the Mabie Law Library entrance -- students may request to borrow display-case books at the Circulation/Reserve desk.
Photocopying
Your ID card will allow to you to use the photocopy machine located on Level 3.
Students with Disabilities
Shields Library adaptive computer equipment: The U.C. Davis Student Disability Center maintains adaptive computer equipment (password required) on the first floor in the Reading Room behind the Information Desk. This area is generally for the use of disabled UC Davis students registered with the Student Disability Center. Online Legal Research Options for Disabled Students: Lexis-Nexis is compatible with accessibility software, including JAWS and Window-Eyes. According to Westlaw's accessibility statement, Westlaw "can be used by individuals utilizing assistive technologies such as text-based browsers, screen readers (such as JAWS and Window-Eyes), Braille terminals, and other adaptive devices (e.g., screen magnifiers, voice recognition software)." Also, Westlaw offers Westlaw Text Only (http://text.westlaw.com) which is "a frameless, text-based interface that optimizes Westlaw for users with visual or mobility impairments, and those with slower internet connections." Study Space: Carrels
First year and LL.M. law students are assigned a study carrel in the Library, two students per carrel. Second and third year students can request to be assigned a carrel. Assignments are made on availability and demonstrated need. Open seating is at tables in the Reading Rooms, at carrels marked X on the floor plans and/or window carrels. Click here

Tours
Upon request, librarians will conduct a library tour or students can follow the Self-Guided Tour available from the Circulation/Reserve desk.
