Access
The Mabie Law Library is available for law study or research during hours. UC Davis Law alums can pay $25.00 annually to receive a key for after-hours access. For security reasons, key holders may not loan key to others or allow others access to the building after hours. The Reserve section is not available after hours. Books are shelved in open stacks with the exception of Rare Books and Archives.
Carrels
Most carrels in the Library are assigned to Law students. Unoccupied carrels may be used by anyone until the assignee returns. Open seating is at tables in the Reading Rooms and at carrels marked X on the floor plans. Carrels must be kept free of litter. Use of electrical appliances, other than PC's and lights, are not allowed. Items of value should not be left unattended in carrels.

Catalogs of Other Libraries
The Mabie Library provides access to MELVYL, the union catalog for University of California libraries and several other California libraries. CDL (California Digital Library) serves as a gateway to a variety of other databases including WORLDCAT, a national cataloging network. To access WORLDCAT or CDL from off-campus, you must be an affiliate (student, faculty, staff) of UC Davis.
Circulation Policies
Mabie Library Books
California photo identification is required with current local address and phone number to check out library books. Circulating books may be signed out for two weeks. No more than five items may be charged out at any one time. Reserve books, located behind the Reserve desk and including hornbooks, CEB, Restatements, reference books, and other popular sets, may be signed out for 4 hours for use in the building. Some books are marked "NON-CIRCULATING" (basic reference sources and popular sets) to assure their availability at all times. Please do not remove non-circulating books from the Library stacks. All books are subject to recall.
Books may be renewed if no holds are pending. Renewals may be made at the Circulation/Reserve desk or by phone (752-3327).
Book Returns
Mabie Library books and interlibrary loan books borrowed from libraries other than Shields Library must be returned to the Mabie Library Circulation/Reserve desk or after hours dropped in the book slot at the Circulation/Reserve desk. All Shields books must be returned to the Shields Library directly.
Books not returned after two recall or overdue notices will be billed at the cost of the book plus a $35.00 processing fee per book (reduced to $15.00 for books returned within one week of the receipt of the bill). Charges for damaged books will be assessed on an individual basis.
