Externship Descriptions
Judicial
Part or full-time externships are available. Students work as staff in state and federal courtrooms, such as the CA Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, as well as all trial courts. Students may research legal issues, evaluate legal arguments, write judicial memoranda, draft opinions and orders and observe trials and law and motion.
Pre-requisites: Judical Process Seminar 261 - required for full-time externships; recommended for part time.
Federal Taxation
Students work with the Internal Revenue Service, the Franchise Tax Board, or the CA Board of Equalization learning about tax court litigation, collection practice and bankruptcy.
Pre-requisite: Federal Taxation 220
Legislative Process
Students may work as staffers to legislators or legislative committees, the Governor's legislative staff or with one of Sacramento's many lobbying organizations.
Pre-requisite: Elections and Political Campaigns 240 - may be waived with permission
Public Interest
Placements range from government agencies, such as the U.S. Attorneys Office, to nonprofit law firms and legal aid offices. Students provide direct legal services, community education, litigation, mediation, community economic development and lobbying.
Pre-requisites: Public Interest Seminar and Comparative Public Service - both recommended
Criminal Justice
Students work part or full time in a criminal justice office, such as a county, state or federal prosecutor or defender's office. Emphasis is on observation and participation in factual investigation, interviewing, counseling, negotiating, motion practice, and trials.
Pre-requisites: Evidence 219; Criminal Procedure 227A; Criminal Law 1206; Trial Practice 263A - recommended
Environmental
Students work in government, non-profit or private law offices engaged in environmental law work, such as allocation of scarce water resources, hazardous waste treatment, and protection of animal and plant species.
Employment Relations
Experience in employment relations, including discrimination and public sector labor law. Students work in employment and fair labor agencies.
