COMMENCEMENT 2009
10:30 AM Saturday, May 16, 2009, ARC Pavilion
CEREMONY:
Candidates will assemble by 9:30 AM outside the southwest entrance. In the event of rain, please meet inside and you will be directed where to go. Your guests should use the northeast lobby entrance. Free parking will be available in lots 25, 35, and 45. TICKETS ARE NOT REQUIRED FOR ADMISSION TO THE CEREMONY. THERE IS NO LIMIT AS TO THE NUMBER OF GUESTS YOU CAN HAVE.
The ceremony usually lasts no more than 2 hours.
RECEPTION:
Immediately following the ceremony, a reception will be held for degree recipients, their families and friends, and friends of the School. Some families stay at the reception the entire time and others mingle quickly and leave. Finger-type food will be served at the reception so if you plan on going, you might want to consider dinner with the family rather than lunch. The reception will be held in the plaza in front of the ARC.

Faculty Speaker: Joel C. Dobris
Presenting the Law School Medal: Dean Kevin R. Johnson

DIRECTIONS:
GRADUATION CHECKLISTS:
Graduation checklists are available on the Law School Intranet site under the "Course Tools" tab. These lists are for informational purposes only; it is your responsibility to verify your graduation requirements. Please contact Courtney or Nicole in the Registrar's Office if you need assistance.
NAME VERIFICATION FORMS:
Undergraduate degree verification and name verification forms are available on the Law School Intranet site. Absolute Deadline - March 16. If you have not verified your information by the March 16 deadline, we will use what is currently listed on your student record. Your undergraduate degree is listed on the commencement program under your name (not on your diploma). Your name is listed as it will appear both in the program and on your diploma. If you want to make a change to your name, please complete a name change petition available online by following the link: Petition for Name Change.
If you have completed a name change petition, return it to the Law School Registrar's Office.
ACTIVITIES, AWARDS, AND SCHOLARSHIPS:
Activities, awards, and scholarships are printed in the back of the commencement program. This information is also on the Law School Intranet site. Please choose those that apply to you from the list provided. These apply to your Law School career only. If you have something you want to add that is not on the list, include in the request line. This link will remain open until March 24.
Since we are under a print deadline for the program and must have all information completed by early April, the deadlines assigned for checklists, verification forms, and activities and awards will be a firm deadline. No exceptions will be made.
ACADEMIC DRESS:
The academic attire for participants in the ceremony is a doctoral gown and cap with a purple tassel. Academic hoods are provided by the Law School the day of commencement and are distributed to students before they cross the stage. Graduates are required to return the hood borrowed from the law school. Hoods are available for purchase for those who want to keep a hood after graduation. See Purchasing Academic Hoods, below.
How to order:
Rental cost is $35, which includes cap, gown, and tassel. Gown rental is free with purchase of a Grad Pack. Online ordering will be available beginning March 1, 2009, at the UC Davis Bookstore website. JD and LL.M. candidates must order their academic attire no later than midnight on April 1, 2009. If you have not pre-ordered by the April 1 deadline, you must contact the Commencement Coordinator at the bookstore to arrange to place your rental order in person. A $10 late handling fee will apply. All orders will be delivered to King Hall. Caps and gowns will be available for pick up in the Career Services Office the week prior to commencement. You will be notified by e-mail when you can pick them up. If your order includes a Grad Pack, it will be delivered for pick-up with your cap and gown. For Grad Pack pricing and/or information on availability of class rings and portrait photography, please visit the UC Davis Bookstore website.
Purchasing Academic Hoods:
If you choose to purchase your own hood rather than borrow the Law School hood, academic hoods are available at a cost of $145.95. Students can access and print the order form by clicking on the following link: (Purchasing Academic Hoods) or call Kelly Holt from the UC Davis Bookstore at 752-5915 to place an order directly with him. The bookstore normally carries a limited supply of new JD hoods in stock, but they can also be special ordered at no additional cost if they run out. In order to have one in time for our ceremony, orders should be placed by April 1.
Gown/Hood Return:
You may keep your cap and tassel, but the gown and hood must be returned immediately following the ceremony. A collection station will be posted at the reception held in the plaza in front of the ARC.
ANNOUNCEMENTS, ETC:
Announcements can be ordered online at the UC Davis Bookstore website. Your order will ship within two days and estimated ship time is up to five days. You can also order over the phone at 1-800-433-0296. For Grad Pack pricing and/or information on availability of class rings and portrait photography, please visit the UC Davis Bookstore website.
Some customization is allowed on announcements for special activities and awards. In order to do a special order, you need to place the order via the vendor's 800 number available on the UC Davis Bookstore website.
PHOTOGRAPHY:
A professional photographer will be present to take a class picture before the ceremony and an individual picture as you cross the stage and immediately after you exit the stage. We will distribute brochures and order forms as commencement approaches.
Family and friends wishing to take photographs of candidates are requested to do so either before or after the ceremony. During the ceremony there will be a designated photography area on the upper level of the Pavilion for their use. They will not be allowed to come any closer to the stage or use the center aisle for their photography.
Videotaping the ceremony is allowed from the upper level of the Pavilion as long as the equipment does not obstruct other guests' view.
SPECIAL ASSISTANCE:
For the convenience of all guests with mobility problems, please ask them to arrive as early as possible to locate their seating. The most convenient seating is on the main floor. Wheelchairs are not provided at the Pavilion. Handicapped parking spaces are located close to the Pavilion. If a guest needs convenient parking due to mobility problems, you may request a special parking permit. Please contact Gia Hellwig directly to request these special parking permits. Please allow approximately two weeks.
DIPLOMAS:
A certificate commemorating the ceremony will be presented to each participant at commencement. Diplomas will be available to pick up at the Law Registrar's Office by July 20 - watch Boards for notice of availability. If you prefer to have your diploma mailed to you, please complete the form by clicking on the following link:Mail my diploma. There is a small fee for this service.
HONORS:

In order to be elected to the Order of the Coif, students must be in the top 10% of their graduating class and have 75% of their UC Davis units as graded units. The list of students eligible for Coif membership is voted on by the UC Davis Law faculty at the first faculty meeting of the academic year following graduation. If you qualify for Order of the Coif, you will receive an invitation letter some time in September. Do not expect to receive anything before that time.
UC Davis School of Law does not recognize Cum Laude or Summa Cum Laude.
KEY INFORMATION: North door building keys must be returned to the Law Library in order to get your key deposit back. Inside door keys must be returned to the Deans' Office. A hold will be placed on your diploma if you do not return inside door keys.
LAW LIBRARY INFORMATION:
If you are remaining here to study for the Bar, the library will allow you to keep your carrel. They will be contacting you with information regarding this. If you plan to leave directly after commencement, you need to have your carrel cleaned out by May 16.
LOCKERS:
CLEAN THEM OUT before you leave Davis. Some time during the first week of August, lockers will be cleaned out. Anything left behind will be disposed of. Your help is really appreciated.
