BLSA's King Week 2013

The Black Law Students Association's Martin Luther King Jr. Week is off to a great start.

Yesterday, 1L Dominique Davis introduced her father, Judge Leland Davis III of San Mateo County Superior Court, at a lunch presentation.  Judge Davis, who I met at an admitted students reception in San Francisco with Dominique last spring, among other things talked about his career as a public defender and the importance of a lawyer's reputation. He is a graduate of Stanford and Berkeley Law.  I enjoyed the presentation and reconnecting with Judge Davis.

Today brought a great panel of speakers. Otis Benning ‘77, Windie Scott ‘77, Dian Vorters ‘97, and Shanee Nelson ’02 gave inspirational talks to the students. Assistant Dean Sharon Pinkney and I both attended and enjoyed the panelists’ stories about their experiences at King Hall and as practicing legal professionals.

Tomorrow, BLSA presents lunch with Erin Gruwell (the teacher whose story inspired the movie “Freedom Writers”). On Friday, BLSA teams up with the UC Davis Pipeline program to welcome elementary school students for a “shadow day,” including a lunchtime presentation by attorney Keith Staten.

Congratulations on a great culture week, BLSA!
