The Campus
UC Davis is ranked 16th among comprehensive public universities nationwide by the National Research Council, listed as 17th in research funding among all U.S. universities by the National Science Foundation and among the top ten public universities by U.S. News and World Report. The campus is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, one of just 63 institutions of higher learning to be admitted to this distinguished group.

Founded in 1908 as the University Farm amid the fertile fields of the state's Central Valley, UC Davis today encompasses the colleges of Letters and Science, Engineering, and Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; professional schools in law, management, medicine and veterinary medicine; and a new School of Education. It also operates the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, one of the leading teaching and research hospitals in the nation. This is a period of growth and change for UC Davis.

Over the next ten years, the campus will see growth in student, faculty and staff populations and more than $1 billion in construction. New facilities will include new laboratories, new classrooms, and new student sports and recreation facilities. Planning is underway for an Institute for Wine and Food Science. UC Davis won the 2001 Sears Directors' Cup for NCAA Division II, awarded annually to the most successful athletic program in the country.

The Aggies have won the prestigious honor four of the past six years. Sports Illustrated for Women last year named UC Davis the top Division II school for women athletes for the second year in a row. In addition to 25 intercollegiate sports (13 for women and 12 for men), the campus offers more than 30 student-organized club sports. And each year, some 13,000 students participate in intramural sports.

All students can enjoy abundant on- and off-campus recreational facilities for tennis, softball, basketball, volleyball and golf. Given the area's Mediterranean climate, outdoor recreation continues year round.
