When and For How Much Credit May You Enroll in a Clinical?

Both second and third year students may enroll in Clinicals, and may enroll in more than one program under specific guidelines (see below).

General Guidelines for Enrollment in Clinical Programs

You may take up to 16 units during your second and third years in Clinicals and Externships (Law 420, Law 435, Law 440, Law 480) and the following courses:

Law 498 (Group Study)
Law 499 (Independent Research)
Law 408 (Community Education Seminar)
Law 410A and B, 414 (Moot Court)
Law 412, 413, 415 (Competitions, Trial Practice Board)
Law 416, 417, 418 (Law Review, Environs Ed)
Law 419 (Adv. Writing Req.)
Law 495 (Leg. Research or Writing T.A.), and in approved non-law courses.

An additional 4 units (for a maximum of 20 units) may be taken under specific guidelines and with the advance approval of the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs (Dean Kulwin).

Within this 16 unit limit, you may take up to 14 units in Externships (Law 425, Law 430, Law 445, Law 450, Law 455, Law 460, Law 465, Law 470, Law 475).

Unit Guidelines for King Hall Clinicals: (2-6 units per semester)

Please check the application for pre-requisites and priority information.

Civil Rights is limited to 12 students.
Immigration Law is limited to 24 students.
Prison Law is limited to 10 students.
Family Protection and Legal Assistance is limited to 12 students.

The minimum number of units for the first semester in Civil Rights and Prison Law is two and the maximum is six.

The minimum number of units for the first semester in Immigration Law is four and the maximum is six. (Students who have taken 292 Immigration Law and Procedure may take the first semester for 2 units.)

Students may take Clinicals in subsequent second and third semesters at the discretion of the faculty. The maximum number of units for each course is 12.

In the Family Protection and Legal Assistance Clinic, students must participate for two semesters and will receive four units each semester for a total of eight units. Following intensive training at the beginning of the first semester, students will work 10 hours a week the first semester and 12 hours the second semester.
